The number of car accident fatalities in the U.S. was up nearly 10 percent during the first seven months of 2012 in comparison to the first seven months of 2011.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), from the first of the year through the end of July officials reported nearly 21,000 traffic accident fatalities. This is also up about 7 percent from the 2010, illustrating that it’s only getting worse out there on the roads as the economy improves.
Our Boca Raton accident lawyers understand these risks will increase as South Florida enters the busy tourism season. Car accidents landed more than 2 million motorists in the hospital last year — up 10 percent from the year previous.
Not only were there a lot of accidents, but according to officials with the NSC accidents during the first seven months of 2012 cost the country well over $150 billion. That’s up 20 percent in the past two years. Included in these costs were employer costs, administrative costs, medical expenses and property damage.
In the state of Florida, there were more than 1,240 people killed during the first 6 months of 2012. This is a significant increase from the numbers reported over the last 2 years.
As we head into the rest of the year, we all know how congested it’s going to get out there. The snow birds are going to start trickling in, the holiday travel season is expected to be as busy as ever, and the risks for accidents are going to spike. Before we get to that point, we’re asking all drivers to take a step back and to focus in on driving safety with friends and loved ones. You have the power to reduce your accident risks. It just takes a conscious effort.
Practice your safest and most defensive driving habits out there. You wan to be a safe and courteous driver and that can be achieved throughout defensive driving. Make sure that you stay one step ahead of the traffic around you. Always follow the road laws. And make sure you are aware of the laws when you travel.
You can control your driving habits, but you can’t always control the driving habits of other motorists on the road. Make sure you’re always buckled in and that everyone in your car is wearing a seat belt. These devices may be your best defense against serious injuries or even death in the event of a car accident.
Make the effort to stay safe. It’s always worth it.
