It’s time for one of largest motorcycle gatherings in the U.S. Of course we’re talking about Daytona Beach Bike Week. This event attracts about 500,000 people from across the country — most of them on motorcycles. The event consists of festivals, bike raffles, races and parties galore. It also comes with a significant increase in the risks for motorcycle accidents throughout South Florida during most of March.
Our West Palm Beach motorcycle accident attorneys understand that motorcycle accidents are a year round concern here in the Sunshine State. Just a week ago we saw two motorcyclists sent to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, according to The Palm Beach Post. With Daytona Beach Bike Week, officials know that accidents will be more common. When were near holidays and motorcycle events, we see an increase in riders out there. More riders means that we see higher accident risks.
According to USA TODAY, we should be most worried about our older motorcyclists. Although accidents are more common among younger bikers, injuries among older bikers tend to be more severe.
A new study from Injury Prevention notes the older we are, the more serious our injuries tend to be in the event of a collision. As Baby Boomers age, the number of older motorcyclists is rising, too. In 1990, motorcyclists over the age of 50 only accounted for about 10 percent of riders. In 2003, motorcyclists over the age of 50 accounted for about 25 percent of riders. That number continues to grow.
Older Motorcyclist Statistics:
-Hospitalization is about three times more likely in the oldest age group of motorcycle riders.
-Severe injury is about three times more common in the older age group of riders.
-Internal injuries are most common among this age group. Brain injuries were the most common type of internal injury.
Researchers believe it has a lot to do with how our bodies age. Our body weakens with age and we have a higher risk for injuries. Researchers also know reflexes deteriorate, balance is altered, our reaction times are delayed, our vision worsens and we experience other age-related disadvantages.
What we would like to focus on is reactions. It’s important that our abilities are also top notch so that we can steer clear of dangerous whenever possible. It’s oftentimes the drivers of passenger cars that are at fault in these kinds of accidents. Make sure you stay out of drivers’ blind spots. You want to keep a safe distance from passenger cars. You can’t always rely on their safe driving habits to keep you save out there. Take matters into your own hands and drive safely and defensively to reduce your risks for an accident. Motorcycles are oftentimes overlooked along our roadways — and serious accidents result from it.
