Officials with the Allstate Insurance Company have recently released the 9th annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.” Every year, officials with the insurance company release their findings on the safest places to drive in the U.S. Officials look at claims and they look at the largest 200 cities in the nation in terms of accident risks.
Once again, Fort Collins, Colorado has ranked as the safest place to drive. This is the third year the city has ranked number one. Every other year (since the report launched) they’ve ranked in the top 10.
Our West Palm Beach car accident lawyers understand that 11 Florida cities ranked in the top 200 this year. Included in this list were Cape Coral, Port St. Lucie, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Hollywood/ Pembroke Pines/Miramar, Tampa, Miami and Hialeah.
Yes, we had a significant number in the top 200 for the safest drivers in the nation, but most of those cities had some serious risks for accidents. Take Orlando for example. Orlando was ranked as the 153 city for safe drivers. Drivers in this area were expected to have about 8 years between accidents. On the other hand, they were about 26 times more likely than the national average to get into an accident. On this list, “safe drivers” can be deceiving.
In Daytona Beach, there were 10 fatal traffic accidents recorded in 2011. According to City-Data.com, there were 14 vehicles involved in fatal accidents throughout the year. In all, 11 people were killed.
Throughout the state of Florida, there were more than 227,990 traffic accidents reported in 2011 — more than 334,800 drivers were involved. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), there were more than 2,200 people killed in these accidents. Another 181,650 were injured and more than 107,000 resulted in property damage-only accidents.
But it’s not just the motorists who are affected by these accidents. Pedestrians and bicyclists are also being injured and killed. In 2011, there were close to 500 pedestrians killed and another 120 bicyclists killed in traffic accidents in the state of Florida.
As the saying goes you can’t change others but you can change yourself. The same goes for driving to avoid car accidents. Getting upset with other drivers doesn’t make our roadways safer. The only protection you have against other drivers is to be a safe and defensive – drive safe, recognize the bad drivers and avoid them.
We don’t want anyone to become a statistics, and safe driving habits are going to help. Drive safely, keep an eye on your surroundings and remember that we’re all in this together.
